“Friends of the South Downs” is a brand name of the South Downs Society, an independent, member-led charity; without any political affiliation, which is supported by membership subscriptions, donations and gifts in wills.
We are the National Park Society for the South Downs.
- Formed in 1923, we fought and won a campaign against plans for an inappropriate housing developments on the Seven Sisters, we are one of Britain’s earliest conservation organisations originally known as The Society for Sussex Downsmen.
- We are guardians of the landscape from the steep hanger country of Hampshire and the heaths of the Western Weald across the Sussex hills to the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. We are the only charity dedicated to the protection of the whole of the South Downs National Park.
- We are committed to ensuring the National Park is protected for the peaceful enjoyment of all and for future generations.
